Most of those books come from Online libraries and those libraries offer an html version of the book that is identical to what you see in a chm.
CHM can be similar to PDF soon that CSS is becoming more supported by the major browser, but it won't be before about 4 to 5 years when CSS 3 is supported that CHM can be similar to PDF.
I prefer PDF's, I don't print any books and therefore I like PDF versions. Sometimes buying the books is impossible(reading Salman Rushdie in the Middle East for example), and that's when a PDF comes in handy.
CHM also destroys the natural arrangement of the books in PDF. Actually, I think it's why some publishers release their books in CHM. So that you will still need a hard copy even if you have a CHM eBook on your desk.

The CHM format was primarily created as a more superior .HLP help file for Visual Studio/software documentation, utilising HTML standards. But to say "some publishers release their books in CHM" is hilarious because CHM ebooks is exclusive to LiB, DDU, BBL. They know what's involved, and all respectz to them.

I was not referring to the individual teams, I was referring to websites like Student Consult and Net Library. Where publishers actually are in control, I still buy genuine books, and believe me, Robbin's Pathology that you download is nothing compared to the organization and the clearance of the actual textbook.
Some users here mentioned that they buy books instead of printing CHM's, which is my opinion what the publishers want you to do. It's like how you can get 128 kbps mp3's off the Internet, but you have to pay if you want the full quality of the CD(unless you download lossless releases, which is a different story). :)
Peace!

Student Consult is bascially a "free" medical lib like other subscription-based IT libs. On the web, one will have seem numerous medical titles in CHM format obtained from Student Consult. So the only ppl in control are the handful of medical students who understand the relationship between HTML and CHM, and have spidered their way to generate CHM for medical students around the World. Being medical students, their understanding of CSS is non-existant, hence the outputted CHM is not of the standard one expects from LiB, DDU, or BBL. Nonetheless, the CHMs save $$$ for the poor med student.

M$ Press used to enclose the ebook in CHM up until 2002/2003, but now they supply books in PDF on the accompanying physical book's CD.
Any recent M$ Press ebooks in CHM are courtesy of BBL. ;)
